The Final Music Video

This is the final music video. I hope you enjoy it, I will evaluate it in another post.

Ancillary Text 2 - Website

This is the Website we created for the band Visioned Karma, just click the link below:

Ancillary Text 1 - Digipak

This is the final digipak. As you can see there is a constant nature theme going through the whole digipak. We have added a barcode, record company logo and a disclaimer to make our digipak look more professional.

I found that making the digipak wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I feel the colours complement each other and the CD itself has a nice design.

We made some other changes by adding text in specific pictures to fill in space, we also added little pictures to us for spines but they still follow the nature theme.

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Evaluation Question 2

This is an image of the Glogster file I made for question 2 while Glogster isn't allowing me to embed it here is the link if you would like to check it out:

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The feedback from my audience was mainly positive as you can see in the video. Many of the ideas and concepts in my final product reflected well with my audience.

What did you think of the Music Video?
The audience generally liked the music video, some where even surprised by how good it was. They enjoyed the speed of the editing along with the angles and shots used. Many of them particularly enjoyed the throwing of the focus in many of our shots, "sometimes your focusing on the two character, but then your focusing on the scenery. It's very nice". This was really good feedback as we wanted to use this technique because our video had a lot of background activity and the throwing of the focus to highlight specific aspects of the video was used to tell the audience where they should be looking, therefore making it easier for them to follow the narrative. One person we interviewed said that the polarisation effect we put on some of the scenes gave our video its own unique style, which was very good to hear as we wanted to both follow the conventions and yet still display our own unique style of imagery.

Could They Feel a Narrative?
We were given a mixed response with this one. 2 out of 3 people said they sensed a narrative. While 1 person didn't. I believe this may be due to the fact that the music video was heavily focused on the performance, because of the genre of the song we felt performance was the main element and so our narrative was limited. However we did included a narrative, even if unclear. The ways we tried to make up for the narrative was by showing a short opening of the two characters and a short dialogue over the phone. We felt the dialogue would give some clue to what the narrative was. In future I would make sure to highlight the narrative and make it clearer to the audience. The 2 people that did sense a narrative did not grasp the whole of it. While they understood that the two characters where indeed bandmates and friends who were meeting up for a practice, they didm't understand that some scenes where supposed to be a dream sequence. we tried to make this more obvious with the use of the solaria filter. We believed if the audience saw this effect they would assume it was a dream as the main character had previously being shown falling into bed and closing his eyes. But again this is a learning experience which has shown me that we need to make the narrative cleared for the audience, one of the ways I believe I would do this is make the polarisation effect more intense and possibly add a longer dialogue to fully explain the situation.

What Do They Think Worked Well?
All of the people interviewed thought the way the music video Flowed was done well. In terms of editing techniques we tried to edit the clips in time with the beat of the music. We found that it was a huge success as all the people interviewed really enjoyed the way the video was put together and the shot types used. We also wanted the music video to look authentic and professional this is why we spent time editing the guitars so that they synched up with the music. I really believe that's what made the video more realistic and showed verisimilitude as the guitars and bassists hands both strummed/ finger picked to the beat and when there was a chord change in the song the audience could see the guitarist and bassist change chords instead of playing the same note. This made the video more visually appealing to myself as I know how bad it is for a musician to watch a music video where the instrument isn't synched with the music.

What Did They Like Most?
The first person says the video was adventurous. To be honest I couldn't have hoped for a better response, as you will see in my audience research I found every person I interviewed said the song made them think of some kind of journey or adventure. With this response I know we have succeeded in making their ideas a reality and I am very pleased that I could provide a style music video which the audience themselves suggested. The second person liked the idea and concept of the music video as it conformed to the genre style of the music with the two bandmates playing their song together. It used both conventions and unique elements to produce a video which still had the feel of a progressive rock song but showed some visuals which where of a unique style to the artist. The third person liked the specific shot where the camera was focused on the secondary character yet the secondary character was watching and focused on the main character. I was really glad that someone found this shot to be their favourite because at the time I had come up with the shot on the day and It makes me happy to know someone could appreciate the shot.

What Improvements Could be Made?
The first person suggested a more aggressive ending. I understand where he is coming from while I did contemplate putting in more performance I felt that the music was more focused on bringing itself down into the final notes. Because of this I felt that the two characters walking away in the distance was the best shot for the ending because It represented a finish, the song was done and the characters where off onto their own paths, one which the audience may have to wait until a second music video to see. This would help the artist gain more success as the audience would come back for a second music video to see what adventure the artists go on next. Another suggestion was some minor filter changes. I agree with this as the solaria filter could've being improved upon however it was beyond our technological knowledge so we left it unchanged. The fuzz he was talking about occurred in the opening scene however again we did not know how to technologically fix this problem and because the lighting was all natural we didn't know how it occurred in the first place.

I learned that our audience generally enjoyed the music video we created I feel we have succeeded in creating something which follows the conventions but gives our own personal style. I feel that the shots we used had some creative element to them. However even with the positive response I understand that it can be majorly improved I think one of the reasons it wasn't as good as I personally set out to make it was because of the lack of time we had to create it. I believe that given more time I could've created a music video which would have the professional look of a big budget music video yet have an artistic image of an independent music video.

Evaluation Question 4

Rough Digipak

This is a rough digipak, we used it to gather audience feedback to see what improvements we could make. The feedback was mainly good but we were given some ideas on how to improve it, mainly that the two images (top right and top left) are considered to be very empty. To improve this we will be adding quotes from the artists and therefore filling up the space and making the digipak look more professional. Our audience liked the theme because it was consistent throughout out the digipak. As you can see it has a specific nature theme throughout the digipak this ties in well with our music idea and our website. The use of the saturation in the images also ties in with the dream sequence in our music video. Overall there will be minimal changes to the digipak but still the changes will be noticeable.

Final Record Company Logo

This is the final record company logo. It is an image of a monitor with the text 'Bass records'. The monitor was chosen because it is generic equipment that is used by musicians and record companies. I didn't want to choose something as generic as a vinyl because I believe it is overused and dated. A monitor on the other hand is a currently used item in both recording and live shows. I used two different fonts for the words. I used a thicker, block font for 'BASS' because basses are usually thick and deep and this font suits the characteristics of a bass. The other font I used was in the style of scratchy stencil I used this font to link it to vinyls because vinyls are scratched by a needle to produce the sound. I also added a drop shadow to show we are not a two dimensional company and we have many outlets.

Making of the Record Company Logo

I was the one who created the record company logo and this is my step by step guide to how I created it. I used an SLR to take the photo and Photoshop to edit the photo.

Analysis of a website

This is a website deconstruction. I am using this to understand how to layout a website, most websites have a simple but slick layout. You should be ale to know what the band is doing, any tour dates and images of the band, both their work and personal lives.

I believe the key to a website is to establish a connection between the audience and the band. It is the main way to reach the artist other than social networking sites.

Rough Edit

This is a rough edit of the music video. We have used this to gather feedback and make changes that would better the video. As you may notice it is still unfinished but we will use suggestions from the feedback to fill in the gaps.

Inspiration: Black & White/Colour

Jake Bugg's Lightning Bolt inspires me because of the style it is filmed. I believe that the visuals match the audio very well as the song is in a 60s/70s folk and country genre, I think the song and video is heavily influenced by Bob Dylan.

This is an image from Bob Dylan's 'Blood In My Eyes'

This is an image from Jake Bugg's 'Lightning Bolt'

As you can see the images are very similar

I also like the way the video features lots of different locations and random shots of the town. I feel inspired by this music video because the concept is very similar to my own with Jake Bugg on a journey. I am thinking about using some random shots of my town because I can seed it is very effective in establishing the location and letting the audience see places that are familiar to them, which would establish a connection between the artist and the audience. The changing of colour to black and white shows intertextuality between Bob Dylan and Jake Bugg.

Final Logo

This is the final logo for the band. It shows an elephant blowing water out of his trunk in a waterfall fashion. The elephant was selected for many reasons. First it is a peaceful animal and the music fits the same description. The flowing water connotes a flow in the music a melody of sorts. It is a minimalistic design because of the conventions of band logos, for example the 'Red Hot Chile Peppers' their band logo is just a star and 'Queens of the stone age' have a two pronged fork. Because of this reason I have kept the design to minimal detail. Another reason why we chose the elephant was because it is the lead guitarist's/front man's favourite animal and this allows the band to connect with the fans on a personal level as it lets them know more about the bands likes and dislikes.

Making of the Band Logo

I was the one who made the logo and this is my step by step on how I designed and and coloured the logo.

My Practice CD cover

This is the CD cover I made, I made this in photoshop. In the lesson we were told to flickr a random image then use wikipedia to get a random band name. We then downloaded a font of our choosing on dafont. Finally I found a random quote and took the last five words and used them as a album title. This is what I came up with.

As you can see I edited the text to fit in with the image. I used drop shadow to create a shadow effect to make them in sync with the image.

This is only quick edit but it has already inspired me on what my digipak will look like.

What is a Digipak?

A Digipak is a special CD/DVD of an album which usually comes with a physical copy of the disc, a case and a booklet. There can also be some other extras in the Digipak for example artwork, postcards, bonus discs etc.

Here are some example's of Digipaks:

This is an example of a simple and minimalistic digipak. As you can see the main colour scheme is black and each bandmate is given a specific colour. The CD in the centre is a combination of all the colours with black stripes going through it. This is a 10 panel digipak, 5 panels each side, this means it is more detailed than most digipaks. Conventional digipaks are either 6 panels or 4 panels.

This digipak on the other hand is very detailed, in the sense that the design is very intricate and it sticks to one concept. It features two CDs which is another feature of a digipak. The colour is a grayish green colour which could connote an erie tone. I prefer this digipak because it is very detailed and the concept is kept through all of the panels.

Digipak Analysis

Today we looked at digipaks and analysed one. We looked at the codes and conventions. We found that all digipaks have some sort of bonus content to them whether it be a second CD/DVD or a lyric book or even random post card and other notes or ideas the band originally had. From this analysis you can see that this digipak came with a lyric book along with two other CDs all the as you can see if the CDs are aligned they have an overlapping image I believe I may use this feature for the design of my own digipak.
