Laura Mulvey came up with a theory called the 'Male Gaze'. In Her theory she states that all media is designed by heterosexual males for young heterosexual males. This is suggested because of how women are objectified in todays media. She suggests this is used to draw the male audience in even if they are not the primary target audience.
An example of the 'Male Gaze' theory would be this rolling stones magazine cover. Firstly why would Jennifer Aniston be on a musically themed magazine. This is part of the 'Male Gaze' theory. She has no business being there but obviously if any Heterosexual male see's this cover, whether he like this style of music or not he is more encouraged to buy the magazine just because there is a is a woman being objectified on the front cover.
